
Picking the Right Infrared Lamp for Your Bathroom
Here is the first thing you need to get straight about infrared heat: you aren’t actually heating the air in the room. You’re heating the walls, the floor, and—most importantly—you. Because of that, getting the wattage right is everything. If you toss a beefy 1200W lamp into a tiny powder room, you’re going to bake yourself alive or fry the bulb. But if you put that same lamp in a massive master bath? You’ll be standing there shivering, wondering why it isn’t working.
Getting the power right
It all comes down to distance. Shortwave infrared moves in a straight line, so the closer you are to the lamp, the more you feel it. In a small bathroom (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It’s a tight space, so the heat hits you almost instantly. For those medium-sized rooms (4m² to 8m²), you’ll want to bump it up to 800W or 1000W. But once you get into those big, luxury baths over 10m², one lamp just won’t do the trick. You’ll end up with “cold spots” where you’re freezing in one corner and roasting in another. Your best bet there is to wire up a few 1200W units to spread the warmth around.
A few things to watch out for
Check your ceilings. A standard 2.4m height is usually fine, but if you’ve got those fancy vaulted ceilings, you’re going to need more wattage. The heat has further to travel, and some of that punch is lost along the way. Also, keep an eye on your electrics. High-wattage lamps pull a lot of power. If you’re putting three 1200W lamps on a single circuit, double-check your breaker so you don’t trip it every time you take a shower. And a pro tip: these lamps get hot at the socket. Use high-temp wiring. Trust me, you don’t want to deal with melted insulation.
Stop wasting electricity
The easiest way to save money is to stop leaving the heat on. A manual switch is a trap—you’ll forget to turn it off. Stick a timer or a motion sensor on the line instead. You’ll get that cozy, warm feeling the second you walk in, and the power cuts off the moment you leave. It’s the smartest way to get the room warm fast without throwing money away on a massive electric bill.
