If you’re running a tunnel kiln for oversized tempered glass, you’ve probably realized that standard, off-the-shelf heating lamps just don’t do the job. They aren’t built for this. That’s why we build custom infrared units that stretch past 2 meters. The goal is simple: make sure the heat is the same everywhere on that glass, no matter how big the piece is.
The struggle with long-form heating
Building a unit over 2 meters isn’t as simple as just making a longer tube. If you get the wattage and voltage wrong, the filaments start to sag or, worse, they just burn out. We look at your conveyor speed first. That tells us exactly how much power density you need. Here’s the thing: more surface area is great, but it opens the door for cold spots if the wiring isn’t perfectly balanced. We use high-grade quartz tubing to take the hit of that thermal stress. Just a heads-up—make sure your power supply can handle the whole array. You don’t want your voltage dropping off a cliff by the time it hits the end of the line.
Avoiding the “Zebra Effect”
Nobody wants those annoying heat stripes ruining a piece of tempered glass. We call it the “zebra effect,” and it’s a nightmare. To stop it, we overlap the radiation zones of each unit. This creates one big, smooth field of heat. We also use heavy-duty connectors because kilns vibrate, and the last thing you need is a lamp shaking loose. Plus, we design these as drop-in replacements. When a tube eventually pops, you can just swap it out. You shouldn’t have to rewire your entire kiln just to fix one lamp.
The real-world trade-offs
Let’s be honest: pumping this much heat into a kiln puts a massive strain on the chassis. These units have the raw power to handle thick glass, but they throw off a ton of ambient heat. Your cooling fans and vents need to be up to the task. If your airflow is weak, the lamp housings will overheat, and your filaments won’t last nearly as long. It’s a balance. Higher heat density means you can speed up your cycle time and get more done, but it means you have to be way more aggressive about keeping the equipment cool.
