
How to Stop Your Glassware from Shattering During Tempering
Working with glass is a bit of a balancing act. You need heat, and you need it fast, but if you push too hard too quickly? Everything cracks. It’s frustrating, wasteful, and a nightmare for your bottom line. To get around this, we use short-wave infrared (IR) quartz lamps. They’re perfect for “flash-heating” because they don’t lag. You can dial the power up or down on the fly, which is exactly what you need to keep the glass intact.
The Trick to Fast Power Adjustments
Thermal shock is basically what happens when the outside of the glass gets scorching hot while the inside is still cold. That tension is what causes the break. To stop that, you need a heating source that listens to your controller instantly. That’s where these quartz lamps come in. They’re essentially resistive heaters. The moment your SCR drops the voltage, the heat drops too. No waiting around. We go for high power density here so you can hit your tempering point in a few seconds. But here’s a heads-up: high-wattage tubes pull a lot of juice. If your wiring isn’t beefy enough to handle that initial surge, you’re going to be tripping breakers all morning.
Why Quartz Works
We stick with high-purity quartz because it lets that short-wave IR radiation pass through without wasting energy. Unlike those big convection ovens that have to heat up all the air in the room first, these lamps hit the glass directly. It means you can change your heat intensity without waiting for a whole chamber to warm up. Plus, the lamps are slim. You can pack them tightly into conveyor tunnels and wire them in zones. By tweaking the power in each zone, you create a smooth temperature climb. It’s a much gentler ride for the glass.
The Catch
Now, these things put out a massive amount of heat, but the quartz itself is surprisingly delicate. One greasy fingerprint or a tiny drop of oil on the tube can create a “hot spot.” It sounds minor, but that one spot will eat through the quartz in a matter of hours. If you want these tubes to actually last, you’ve got to keep the environment spotless and be incredibly careful about how you handle them. A little bit of cleanliness goes a long way here.
