
Getting the Heat Right for Silk-Screened Glass
When you’re mixing silk-screening with tempering, you’re basically fighting a battle with physics. You need the glass hot enough to cure the ink and get ready for the quench, but if you push it too hard, the surface temperature spikes. That’s when things get messy—your ink starts to bleed or blur, and suddenly your sharp lines look like a smudge. To fix this, we use shortwave infrared (IR) preheating lamps. They let us hit a very specific “sweet spot” where the glass core gets the heat it needs, but the pattern edges stay crisp. Keeping the patterns sharp The trick is to get the heat in fast and keep it uniform. If you ramp up too slowly, the heat just soaks into the ink, which can ruin the pigment. That’s why we use lamps with high wattage density. They punch the energy through the surface quickly. You can actually tune the intensity just by changing the distance between the lamp and the glass. It makes the cycles fast. Just keep an eye on that surface temp so you don’t accidentally “burn” your print. The gear under the hood We build these lamps with high-purity quartz tubes because they’re the best at letting IR light through. Depending on how fast your conveyor is moving, we’ll tweak the voltage and wattage to keep up with your line. We also use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because lamps eventually burn out. When one goes mid-shift, you just pop in a replacement. No need to spend an hour rewiring the whole heating bank. The balancing act Here’s the thing: high-power IR lamps put out a massive amount of energy, which creates intense heat in small spots. If your cooling zones aren’t dialed in, you’ll end up with uneven thermal stress across the pane. That leads to weird optical distortions or, in the worst-case scenario, the glass just shatters during the quench. It’s all about balance. You have to match the lamp’s output with your conveyor speed. When you get it right, the ink stays sharp and the glass is perfectly ready to temper.
