
Cutting through ultra-thick glass is a brutal process. If you’ve done it, you know the feeling: those diamond wheels take a beating. When the glass is cold, it’s rigid and stubborn. The wheel basically has to fight its way through, which leads to constant chipping and the headache of replacing tools way too often. We found a better way. Instead of just forcing it, we use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps to prep the glass before the blade even touches it. Here’s the trick: most heaters just warm up the surface. That actually creates a dangerous temperature gap that can snap the glass right in half. But shortwave IR is different. It sinks deep into the slab. By targeting the exact path where the cut will happen, we warm the glass up just enough to soften it. It doesn’t melt, but it loses that brittle “fight,” making it much easier to slice through. And the difference in tool life is huge. Instead of hacking through cold silica, the wheel just glides. It feels smoother. You’ll notice your blades keep their edge for a lot longer, meaning you aren’t stopping the line every few meters to swap out a worn-out wheel. Now, it isn’t just “plug and play.” You have to be careful with the setup. If you mount the lamps too close, you’ll overheat the glass and cause thermal shock. Too far, and you lose that deep penetration. Plus, these lamps put out a lot of heat. If you don’t have the right fans or heat sinks in place, you’re going to fry your electronics. It’s a bit of a balancing act. At the end of the day, you’re spending a bit more on electricity to save a lot more on tooling. For most of us, that’s a trade we’re happy to make for a cleaner break and fewer tool changes.
