
Why your lamps are ruining your glass quality
Ever feel like you’re fighting your annealing lehr? You’ve got your settings dialed in, but you’re still seeing weird stress patterns across a sheet or—even worse—your quality swings wildly from one batch to the next. Most of the time, it isn’t your settings. It’s “lamp drift.” Here is the problem: if your infrared lamps vary in output by even 5% or 10%, you get cold spots. To fix it, you usually slow down the belt speed just to make sure the glass stays warm enough. But that kills your throughput. You’re basically paying for a slower factory because your lamps aren’t pulling their weight.
The nitty-gritty of heat
We use high-purity quartz halogen lamps because glass just loves that specific short-wave and medium-wave radiation. It absorbs it way better. But it all comes down to the filament. If the tungsten winding is off by a hair, your heat density shifts. When we talk about “consistency,” we mean that every single tube in your lehr is putting out the exact same wattage per centimeter. We aim for a tight window—usually within ±2%. It sounds like a small detail. It’s actually the difference between a perfect sheet and a scrap pile.
Real-world trade-offs
To keep things stable, we use specific coatings and gas fills. This stops the filament from evaporating too fast, which is why some lamps seem to just “dim” over time. We keep them compatible with R7s or Sk15 connectors, so you can just pop a new one in and get back to work. But a word of caution: if you’re pushing for maximum heat in a short tube to speed up your cycle, you’re putting a lot of stress on your hardware. Check your wiring. Check your sockets. Cheap sockets will char and burn out long before the lamp actually dies. It’s a frustrating way to spend a Tuesday.
